Q&A with the Co-Founders
What is Sidewalk?
"Sidewalk is an app that provides free, guided walk experiences. Sidewalks can be created by anyone with stories to share about the places they know and love." - Jason Donahue, CEO
"Whether you are in your hometown or a thousand miles away, Sidewalk has a walk that will pique your interests, navigate you along the route, and annotate your surroundings with insights, personal recommendations and insider context. Anyone can create a walk and earn gratuities in recognition of a story-worthy experience." - Dave Hotchkiss, CTO
What's the story behind Sidewalk?
"A couple years ago, I brought a freshly printed guidebook to Colombia and found out a little too late that it was crap: the key recommendations were totally off, the maps had errors, shops were either closed or non-existent. I did some sleuthing when I returned and found out that the author had never actually been to Colombia; he just dated an intern at the Colombian consulate. I wanted to build a platform that allowed actual locals to create authentic walking guides that could be updated in real time. Simple as that." - Dave
"Dave and I have known each other since high school. While we went in different directions for college and our careers, we kept meeting up to travel places together. Along the way, we were burned a few times by relying on vague recommendations, subpar tour guides and outdated guidebooks. We finally decided there had to be a better way to explore." - Jason
Are you hiring?
“We’re looking for engineers, designers, editors and others with a love of learning and a curiosity about what is around the corner. If that sounds like you, tell us why at email@example.com” - Jason
Co-Founder & CEO
I am all about exploring local history, architecture, food and art to learn about how places came to be. You can find me in search of hidden gems, the best dim sum, secret speakeasies, skyline vistas and other ingredients to build the perfect day.
Co-Founder & CTO
I've lived in the Mission District of San Francisco for years and have explored my fair share of culinary establishments, from Michelin-starred kitchens to taco stands on the side of the road. I'm always looking for a flavorful bite.
Product Lead - Growth & Lifecycle
I like sporting bow ties, but I'd rather be wearing my backpack, getting lost in the winding alleys of a place I've never been, while eating a donut. Put any street food in front of me and I'll eat it, bugs, the occasional snake heart, anything rotten or on a stick, and of course . . . durian.
